RUFUS
Sire: Bull Hill Tangelo (Imp NZ)
Dam: Pahake Pipette
We began our association with Rufus in 1996 when we purchased him
from Jan & Neil McBain in
We also showed him in hand & under saddle.
He was moderately successful in the led classes, but under
saddle he excelled.
Rufus won many, many Championships under saddle and was excellent in
the Show Hunter Classes.
The most memorable was when he achieved Supreme Champion Ridden
Exhibit at a major South Australian All Breeds Show against all the
other breed champions in the ridden section.
Apart from a brilliant ridden career, Rufus was also to prove
himself as a superb harness pony.
He has been Australian & South Australian Champion in
Combined Driving (Singles) with both Henry & me driving him on
several occasions. He has won gold medals in the Masters games both
ridden & driven. He has
also won many ‘Concourse De Elegance’ titles both at National &
State level ( as a single & most recently in a pair)
Rufus’ greatest achievement as a harness pony in Combined Driving
was when he qualified for the 2005 World Pony Championships in U.K.
at the age of 17 years.
He is the only ‘Aussie’
Rufus has also stolen the limelight at many other local functions.
At the Peterborough 150 year railway celebrations, he
conveyed the local Mayor down a spectator lined Main Street to a
rotunda where a live brass band played the national anthem on his
arrival.
Earlier that same year he got another ‘gig’ delivering the Bishop of
our Diocese to a large public celebration.
He has also taken part in two weddings, safely delivering the
bride & attendants to the Church, before whisking away the
newlyweds……not to mention countless poses for photos along the way.
His most famous photo shoot was a place on the TV Series ‘McLeods
Daughters’ thanks to horse wrangler Bill Willoughby who knew Rufus
would be right for the job.
Apart from his more famous achievements that we have already
mentioned, Rufus has been a part of our everyday lives.
He has taken part in school plays with our kids, visiting
school on many occasions to play a donkey in a religious play, or
something more spectacular (Zorro) on dress up days.
One Christmas he was led in a street parade with a young
intellectually disabled girl on board & gave her a great thrill with
people all around her.
Rufus has also left a great legacy – his offspring.
We are lucky enough to own two of his grandsons & one great
grandson. Forestway Zig
Zag or ‘Ziggy’ is already a Champion ridden, both in open hack
classes and in the Pony club arena, successfully competing at Pony
Club Zone & State level in dressage & showjumping.
Furthermore, following in his grandfather’s footsteps, Ziggy
is also winning in harness, at shows & in Combined Driving Events.
It appears that Rufus’s great ‘all-rounder’ capabilities (from
dressage, jumping, harness etc etc) have been passed on to his
progeny and we look forward to enjoying them as much as we have
Rufus.
At age 19 years (on Remembrance Day 2006), Rufus is still a handsome
& striking animal with an incredible personality.
We think Rufus is an excellent ambassador for the

Happy Birthday to Dorian who turns 21 years old on 15th of October 2006
Dorian is the most successful competition Highland stallion in Australia. He is by the well known Highland pony sire Barrymoor Grand Final out of a Queensland bred mare Taranganba Donia. On both sides of Dorian’s pedigree are the original imported Highland ponies to Australia including Glenearn Brigadier imported to Australia in the late 1960’s and Trooper MacPherson imported in the early 1970’s.
His showing career has spanned over 13 years with numerous wins at Royal and Agricultural shows. He has also competed successfully at Dressage and showjumping. He has now been retired to Stud where he is producing some lovely foals with his very quiet, placid temperament and great rideability.
Some of his career highlights include:
-
Champion Highland Pony Royal Melbourne Show: since inception in 1988 to 2000
-
Supreme Champion Highland Pony Victorian Stud Pony Show: 1987 to 91, 1994, 1996 to 2000
-
National Buckskin Society Highpoint Ridden Stallion: 1991/92, 1994 to 1997, 1999/00
-
National Buckskin Society High Point Led Stallion: 1994 to 1997 & Reserve in 1999/00
-
Supreme Ridden Buckskin 1995 State Championships
-
Placed at the Victorian Dressage Championships 1998 & 99
2004 Supreme Champion Highland Pony HPS Championship show held in Victoria, with judge Scott McGregor from Ballinton Highland Ponies.
Dorian has sired 44 foals to date and has 7 foals
due this season in 2006. His progeny are listed below. To date only
one entire has been kept, Harkaway Lodge Fergus, who stands at stud
in Tasmania and is owned by the Spry Family and 2 young colts have
also been retained, Harkaway Lodge Ben Nevis owned by Jacinta Watson

Of the 7 purebred mares he has sired, all have bred except for 2 and
are spread across Victoria, NSW & Western Australia. Two grand
children are now stallions, Barrymoor MacGregor who is owned by Sue
Moore in Qld and has sired progeny. The other is a young colt,
Barrymoor Mount Bourke who lives in NSW with Roger & Gloria Evans
from Termeil. There are 7 purebred female grand daughters, five of
which are all in Western Australia.
Of the 5 Foundation (AHL) mares he has sired, 3 have gone on to
breed and produced 4 foals of which 3 are females, 2 remain in
Victoria and one in South Australia.
Interestingly, I have charted the different colours he has sired, 21
of which are duns of various shades, 10 Greys, 4 Bays, 4 Browns, 1
Taffy and 1 Black. Of the Duns, 6 are Yellow Dun, 6 Mouse Dun, 6
Cream Dun and 3 Grey Dun.
I am sure we are going to see much of Dorian’s progeny in the
future. He is now enjoying a life of luxury at his home in Garfield,
Victoria and continues to cover a few mares each season although he
is no longer standing at public stud. (Frozen semen is available).

Sire: Barrymore Dorian Dam: Whinmere Rainbow
Forrest was born on 27th September 2006
at 5.10 pm. Forrest has had a
very shaky start to his life. I arrived home at 4.15pm after picking
up children from school and checked Rainbow who along with Tia was
in our foaling yards, she was ready with the waters broken, so I
grabbed the camera and two kids to watch the birth.
After 10 minutes I could tell
there was a problem and could only see one leg and could feel the
other just inside she was pushing to no avail. I left to kids to
watch while I raced to the phone to call the vet and also a neighbor,
who knows nothing about horses to help try and assist.
We waited nearly 35 mins for
the vet to arrive, as we had no luck trying to help her, when he
finally got there it was clearly obvious we had very little time
left so we all pushed the foal back inside her and the vet twisted
the foal around and we all pulled him out as quickly as possible.
He was full of fluid, so some
vigorous rubbing with towels and a few good thumps to his chest we
got him breathing and started to get the fluid out of his lungs.
He was a huge foal for a
Highland Pony. Rainbow was
fine but exhausted, the foal was cleaned off, warmed up with some
towels and rugs and approx 1 hour later he started to try and get
up, successfully. The vet
left to attend another call.
Rainbow, after a good rest got up, but the foal
was not interested in her or drinking.
We waited until evening with
them stabled together but he was not going to drink so the vet was
called again at 10pm and two hours later he had a tube inserted up
his nose and I fed him through the night by milking Rainbow every
hour. As she retained her
membranes she was on antibiotics for a few days as was the foal, he
had numerous needles and tests taken in the days to come to make
sure all was going well and he had no ulcers and infections.
Next morning the tube was out so the vets came
back and we then stitched it to his face so he could not rub it out,
I was still giving him hourly feeds. I could see this being a slow
process as he had no suck reflex at all and no interest in his
mother, who was getting a bit sick of me milking her.
Over the next few days
Rainbow slowly started to dry up so I had to supplement the milk
with Rev milk and the foal named Forrest (after Forrest Gump) was
not interested in anyone. After day eight it was obvious he did not
want his mum and he would not drink out of a bucket or bottle, so I
pulled out the tube and tried in desperation for the next fourteen
hours to get him to suck out of a bottle.
Finally with some force we slowly succeeded late
at night, we now have a bottle fed foal only drinking from his
preferred baby’s bottle with a mother that just keeps an eye on him.
He has been given a special horse formulated milk powder called
Wambaroo! Which he loves. The children and all of us enjoy feeding
him, every two hours to start with then as he got stronger every 3-4
hours.
He has just now passed three months old and is
eating special foal mix feed from Barastoc and

is an incredibly special pony, he is a valuable member of our
family. He produces an outstanding temperament and has blood lines
that are unique and are now sought after.
I was
looking for a Welsh B stallion not sure where to start looking and
called Leslie Barrat-Lennard who suggested that Logo may be for
sale. I spoke to a friend in the U.K who said he had fantastic old
bloodlines not found much now, so went down to Collie to Isobel
Palmers to have a look. I
remember looking across the paddock at this beautiful pony with an
absolutely classic head, he has the kindest eye I have seen in a
pony and I will always remember the day we brought him home. He is
an absolute gentleman in everyway
After
Logo had being started under saddle in 2004 aged 18year, I was
talking to Leslie Barrat-Lennard of Drumclyer Stud she said, “well
you know he was never really backed!” That year he was ridden at the
All Welsh in several different classes and the year after came 2nd
in the ridden stallion class at Perth Royal 2005.
In 2006 he had his final show
at The W.A All Welsh. He has
retired from competition now and he is happy in the paddock at home.
To
date he has given us 2 part bred colts rising 3 – Torridon Oberon
out of Limehill Pixie a beautiful little gelding who was sold as a
family pony, Torridon Court Jester out of a stockhorse mare; he is
very striking and has done extremely well in breed classes over here
and I’m sure he will end up being a beautiful hunter type pony, sold
to be a hunter galloway and a family pony.
Torridon Mystyque is a full sister to Court Jester is grey
and very elegant will possibly be a larger pony she is rising 2years
and has been sold as a foundation filly to be bred from in the
future. Mystique is also
doing very well in local breed shows .
We
had three pure bred fillies last year; Torridon Little Jess out of
Trentlyn Halia (Weston Pinup Boy) Torridon Halo out of Judaroo
Hannah and Torridon Distinction out of Judaroo Liberty all sold
early to future studs. I hope
to retain this year’s foal out of

New Forest Pony
Sire: Forestway Royal Ascot Dam: Ardchattan Monique
Odette was bred by Jan &
Neil McBain of the renowned Forestway Stud near Benalla.
She came to live with us
at Tooborac when she was almost 3 and was my 40th
birthday surprise as a replacement for the ex racehorses I was
becoming increasingly nervous of riding. There was never any
intention for her to do more than hack around the property, rounding
up cattle and also being a larger pony for all the grandchildren to
move onto after the Shetland was outgrown.
In 1999, at the
suggestion of Jan McBain, we entered her in the RAS Summer Show &
APSB Stud Shows. We had no clue of showing and were astonished at
her success at those shows. From then on she was shown in in-hand &
ridden classes by David Maughan, albeit spasmodically due to work
commitments, until 2003 when the grandchildren decided that Grandpa
had better hang up his boots and let them have a go.! The 3 girls
have had great fun and are usually successful on their endeavours.
Since then she has been
prepared (initially with a little help) and shown by Ariane, Kizia &
Priska, who call themselves “The Zeema Team”.
They have done all the work on her themselves and have had
great fun and huge enjoyment from all their hard work with this
wonderful pony. The adult contingent is now the support team of
chauffeur, photographer and catering.
In addition to their
success in the show arena they attend Kyneton Pony Club with her,
each of them taking it in turn to ride her at the monthly rallies
and various interschool events.
At home on the farm,
Odette enjoys rounding up cattle and giving rides to all our little
non-riding visitors, of whom she takes great care. One of the most
amazing things I have seen is her reaction when being ridden by an
intellectually disabled child. Odette walks as if on eggshells, she
has a sixth sense that the child needs protecting.
Even when she has slipped off (due to her lack of balance),
Odette stopped dead still when she felt her balance change until the
situation has been rectified. Her behaviour is quite remarkable.
During the stoppage of
events due to the EI situation, the “Team” auditioned for roles as
extras in a TV series called Saddle Club. In addition to the girls
they were looking for a quiet pony for a disabled child to ride, so
we suggested Odette and she was dragged out of the paddock, given a
shampoo and was back in action once again.
She had never seen
anything like the TV equipment (umbrellas, reflecting screens,
cameras, big fluffy sound booms) all of which were around her at
every angle - including over her head. She was handled by various
strange people (actors, wranglers etc) and she did not bat an
eyelid. She stood perfectly all day and did exactly what was
required of her by anyone who asked. Everyone was astounded by how
calm and wonderful she is and were all asking about the breed of
pony, so of course the New Forests have been given a BIG wrap.
Personality wise, Odette
has 2 definite modes, ‘on’ and ‘off’. As soon as she has done what
is required of her she switches ‘off’ and looks like a poor
substitute for Simpson’s donkey. Once she leaves the ring it is
almost impossible to stand her up for a photo no matter how much
grass/hats/jackets are thrown she is in ‘off’ mode. Come to the
television, on cue she collects herself, pricks her ears and is
‘on’! Quite remarkable.
You can see that Odette
is a special pony in that she is so versatile and gives great
pleasure to so many people. It is wonderful to see “The Team”
working together and sharing her so harmoniously.
Besides just being the
most gorgeous pony some of her major achievements have been:

A TRUE CHAMPION - NEW FOREST MARE
Sire: Forestway Royal Ascot (Imp) Dam: Peveril Paree (Imp)
Not many 25 year old ponies are still having foals, winning at shows
or staging a return to pony club, but “Prem” managed to do all this
in 2003.
We bred her from our superb liver chestnut imported mare “Peveril
Paree”, who in her day had been Supreme Champion saddle pony at the
Ponies of Britain show.
Prem’s sire is “Forestway Royal Ascot” Imp. U.K. and he was only 2
years older- hence her name, as it really was a premiere event.
In 2003, at surely the hottest stud show that anybody has survived,
we were delighted to bring Prem out, with her 17th. foal
at foot, (Forestway Vivid) to have her awarded Champion New Forest
mare from a very strong field of top quality ponies. To have an
international judge was even more prestigious.
Prem’s life has alternated between being ridden and having foals.
The foals have dominated, as 17 foals in 25 years does not leave a
lot of time for riding. She has been to several stallions, mainly
“Ramblers Pick Another” Imp. U.K., and all the older progeny are
winning under saddle or in harness. She
has won under saddle in open company and also at the Vic. stud show
in the Mountain and Moorland classes. Twice she was breed champion
at the Royal Melbourne Show, the only mare to ever beat the
stallions. She also was breed Champion at the Sydney National on
several occasions.
Three generations have enjoyed riding Prem. I used to have lessons
with Kay Irving on Prem, at Kangaroo Ground adult riders, my
daughter Jenny competed at Kangaroo Ground pony club with her and my
Grand daughter, Rosie has competed at Benalla pony club.
My only wish is that we had repeated the Ascot X Paree mating many
more times, instead of only once.
Prems’ half sister, Forestway Sprig’O’Holly, now 31yo., has
had a similar career, mixing riding with countless foals. My current
stallion, “Erinskay Peveril”, whose dam is Holly, will hopefully
continue the line. He is proving to be just as versatile, combining
stud duties with sheep mustering, teaching my G. children to ride
and competing in combined driving events.
Pahake Royal Premiere is still enjoying life, aged 29, with the
occasional gallop, but her coat is very shaggy as evidence of
Cushings disease.
