RETRACTION 2010 FEDERAL JOURNAL PAGE 7 FEDERAL COUNCIL REPORT.

U.K guidelines.

CLIPPING / TRIMMING OF SHETLANDS.

Trimming /Clipping: Only working ponies of four years old or over may be clipped in the interest of welfare, otherwise ponies are shown in full coat. Under no circumstances should foals be clipped. Ponies should always be shown in a clean condition.

The pony’s ears may be trimmed flat but there must be no trimming inside the ear. Trimming of whiskers on the jaw line is acceptable. Manes and tails must not be pulled but tails may be rough trimmed to clear the ground if dragging. Leg feathers must not be trimmed. No false hair, artificial colouring or make up should be used.

The Resolution to accept the U.K guidelines [above]  as per the October 2009 Minutes and printed in the Federal Journal is incorrect.  There was a lot of discussion on this at the time and the decision from the respective states did not support the acceptance of these guidelines that refers to ‘working ponies of four years old or over may be clipped in the interest of welfare, otherwise ponies are shown in full coat.’   Unfortunately, Council did not pick up the mistake in the Minutes until recently, but the time factor does not alter the fact that the Resolution in the October Minutes is incorrect. This will be addressed at the forthcoming Federal meeting.

5.G

Therefore the current breed Regulation for the Shetland Pony stands.

[d] Shetland Ponies must be shown in natural coat and full feather when shown as a representative of the breed in led, saddle or harness. That is, coats must not be clipped or dyed.
